DescriptionThis program is designed for students who are interested in a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) pathway. It is aimed at year 10 students with a good understanding of Science and Maths as well as a desire to develop some basic engineering skills.
The intention is to encourage scientific thinking and investigation through design and application in a more hands-on environment. Key components include: the design of investigation, putting ideas into practice, evaluating and communicating results and, reflecting on the processes involved. This course involves experimentation with robotics, including the Lego EV3 Mindstorms and other practical tasks based on current developments in Science.
TopicsThe program will encourage inquiry based learning, self-directed study and collaborative group work.

Students increase their knowledge of energy and motion and develop the ability to use this knowledge to identify issues and limitations. They develop the skills and abilities to explain scientific phenomena and draw evidence based conclusions from their investigations

AssessmentAssessment will involve:

Individual practical reports based on both group and individual experiment design, using ICT. Students may also present group oral presentations based on their design process and results.
Summative tests and a final examination.
Relationship To Further StudyThis program will aid students who are anticipating studying any Stage 1 (Year 11) Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics type subjects in the future. Please note: this course is at a SACE Stage 1 level and will contribute 10 SACE Credits to the overall SACE pattern.
PrerequisitesStudents MUST have a good understanding and interest in Mathematics, Science and English at the Year 9 standard.
